neck pain (Jenna)Neck pain can result from a variety of conditions, including neck strains, neck sprains, or postural issues. In terms of diagnosis, a physician will often perform a variety of tests to determine the underlying cause. For example, an EMG (electromyography) may be performed to determine if the pain stems from a pinched nerve. In the absence of serious underlying medical conditions, most cases of mild to moderate neck pain respond well to adequate self-care and treatment. However, in some cases Physiotherapy is prescribed or recommended to aid the recovery process and promote healing.

how does physiotherapy help?
- Manual therapy helps relieve tension in overused muscles to reduce muscle imbalances, relieving any excess strain on joints
- Intramuscular stimulation (IMS) induces local inflammation to improve blood flow, aid in healing, and reduce pain
- Promotes relaxation of the injured and surrounding muscles, reducing any pain due to spinal nerve impingement or joint compression
- Ice/heat therapy improves blood flow and reduces pain
- Exercise prescription and modification will help in strengthening surrounding neck muscles to relieve tension from the injured muscle, as well as adjust the current exercise regimen to reduce the risk of reinjury
- Posture assessment and adjustment is often necessary to target the pain associated with misaligned joints and muscle imbalances
