Elbow SPrains (jenna)

An elbow sprain occurs when a ligament of the elbow is stretched or torn. This is different than an elbow strain in which a muscle's tendon or fibers are torn. Elbow sprain severity is classified into three grades:
  • Grade 1: Ligaments are only slightly stretched or torn, and recovery takes a few days to weeks with rest.
  • Grade 2: Ligament(s) are partially torn, resulting in instability. Recovery takes several weeks or 1-2 months for full recovery.
  • Grade 3: Ligament(s) are completely turn, resulting in severe elbow instability/ Recovery takes several months for a full recovery.
Physiotherapy is recommended for moderate elbow sprains, in addition to the treatments listed below.

how does physiotherapy help?

  • Physiotherapists can develop an individualized exercise program with a focus on stretch and strengthen the muscles supporting the
    • Increased support from the surrounding musculature allows for less strain to be placed on the ligaments, allowing for better recovery and healing
  • Heat therapy can be helpful to improve blood circulation while ice therapy may be used to reduce swelling and relieve pain.
  • Intramuscular stimulation (IMS) induces local inflammation to improve blood flow, aid in healing, and reduce pain
  •  Ultrasound can also be used to decrease swelling and improve pain.
